"From Traditional Savings to a ₹80+ Lakh Crore Mutual Fund Industry: India's Investment Revolution"

Mutual Funds in India began as a modest experiment in the 1960s and stayed on the periphery of household investing for decades. However, as traditional savings vehicles like Fixed Deposits, PPF, insurance-linked plans, and provident funds struggled to preserve real value in a low-yield environment, Indian households increasingly embraced Mutual Funds for disciplined, market-linked growth. Over the last decade, the industry's Assets Under Management (AUM) have grown more than six-fold, expanding from about ₹12.75 lakh crore at the end of 2015 to over ₹80.23 lakh crore by December 2025, driven by rising SIP participation and deeper investor confidence across demographics.

Specialised Funds

Specialized Investment Funds (SIF)

Overview

A Specialized Investment Fund (SIF) is a SEBI-regulated category that enables more specialized, strategy-led investing than traditional mutual fund schemes. It is intended for investors who want enhanced strategy flexibility without moving fully into PMS/AIF structures.

Key highlights (investor view)

  • Minimum investment: Rs. 10,00,000 (aggregate across SIF strategies within the same AMC; PAN level)
  • Structure and liquidity: open-ended / interval / close-ended; some strategies may offer non-daily redemption or a notice period
  • Risk: generally higher risk and complexity than mainstream mutual funds

Distributor qualification (regulatory requirement)

Distribution of SIF requires derivatives understanding. Eligibility includes passing NISM Series-XIII: Common Derivatives Certification Examination (covering equity, currency, and interest-rate derivatives).

Who may consider SIF?

SIF may be relevant for investors who can allocate Rs. 10 lakh or more, have medium-to-high risk tolerance, and accept that returns and liquidity may differ from long-only mutual fund schemes.

Our approach (suitability-first)

  • Assess risk tolerance, drawdown comfort, time horizon, and liquidity needs
  • Define portfolio role (core vs satellite) and allocation limits
  • Review product documentation and disclosures before execution
